Georgia Takes Most Titles at 2012 USTA Southern

Georgia was the top state in the 2012 USTA Southern Jr. Team Tennis Section Championships.

Georgia had three champions and three finalists among the eight champions crowded. North Carolina had three champion teams and one finalist. Kentucky and Mississippi had the two other titlists in the coed-team competition. Wilmington, N.C. was represented by two champions.

The winning teams from the 14-and-under and 18-and-under levels won the right to represent USTA Southern at the 2012 USTA Jr. Team Tennis National Championships in October.

Competition ran from Friday, Aug. 17 through Sunday, Aug. 19 at the Yarbrough Tennis Center (which served as tournament headquarters), the Auburn University Intramural Tennis Courts and the Samford Avenue Tennis Center.

Teams represented the nine states in USTA Southern, by far the largest of the 17 sections in the country.

Teams play boys’ singles, girls’ singles, boys’ doubles, girls’ doubles and mixed doubles in each match. Advanced players are NTRP 3.5 and above. Intermediate players are NTRP 3.0 or below. All advanced levels were decided by round-robin pla

Approximately 35,000 or 42 percent of all Jr. Team Tennis players in the nation play in the Southern Section. The section has 60 percent of the 10 and Under Tennis players.

National championships will be played in Lexington, S.C. with the 14s competing Oct. 18-21 and the 18s competing Oct. 25-28.
